Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an Alumni Census being conducted now?

The University of Michigan has not conducted a census of all alumni since 1994. There are over twice as many U-M alumni living across the globe as when the last census was completed.

How long is the Alumni Census?

The census includes three short sections: profile information, contact information, and educational information. The form generally takes under three minutes to complete.

What questions are on the Alumni Census?

Questions include your current job, where you are living, and any additional degrees you’ve obtained at other universities.

Do I have to log in?

By logging in, the Census form can display the information that U-M already has on file for you, allowing you to quickly review and update it where needed. U-M takes your data security seriously, and is ensuring that your information cannot be accessed by others.

If you have any difficulty creating your U-M Login, you can contact the ITS Service Center at 734-764-HELP (764-4357) or 4HELP@umich.edu.

How will the information be used?

The information will be used by the University of Michigan to make sure you get all of the publications and news sent to the right place, and that you stay connected to fellow alumni. We hold your privacy in high regard, and the information will not be shared outside of the University of Michigan and Alumni Association, except as required by law. You can read more in the Alumni Association privacy policy and U-M privacy policy.

Will the information I provide be shared publicly?

The bicentennial Alumni Census does not change what types of information are shared publicly, though it does help ensure the information is up-to-date.

Various units at the University of Michigan currently host alumni directories. Each school, college, or unit communicates with alumni before publishing any information, which is then accessible to other alumni from their unit. The Alumni Association is working on developing an online directory that would be accessible to all alumni.

Why does the degree selection question list “A.B.”, “S.B.” and “A.M.”?

U-M follows the tradition of Latin degree names. For example, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, “artium baccalaureus,” is abbreviated “A.B.”

I am receiving an error message when I try to submit the form.

All required fields must be completed in order to submit the Census. Open each section of the form to locate questions with an asterisk. The profile section requires prefix, first name, last name, and employment status.

Why is the new information I submitted not showing up when I log back into the Census form or on MCommunity?

Information from the Census form is uploaded at differing timelines. While some types of information are refreshed daily, others will be uploaded at the end of the Census project.

Who do I contact if I have additional questions or difficulty completing the Alumni Census form?

If you have questions about logging in, including difficulty creating a uniqname or resetting your password, contact the ITS Service Center at 734-764-HELP (764-4357) or 4HELP@umich.edu.

For all other questions about the Census, contact the Alumni Relations team at the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan at 800.847.4764 or alumni@umich.edu.
